The composition of the present work derives from a design created c.1532/33 by MICHELANGELO (1475-1564) to be executed in paint by PONTORMO (1493-1557) for the patron Bartolomeo Bettini. The painting generally considered as the first version is now in the collection of the Galleria dell'Accademia, Florence (oil on panel, 128 x 197 cm – 50 ½ x 77 ½ in.)

The subject was very popular in Renaissance Florence, in the catalogue of the exhibition “Venus and Love” are listed 32 known period versions (6 of comparable small dimensions). Michelangelo’s original cartoon is probably lost. Copies that served to transfer the outlines as underdrawing for replicas, are conserved at Galleria Nazionale de Capodimonte in Naples, the British Museum, London and the Musée du Louvre, Paris.

Mirabello CAVALORI is known for only a few but outstandingly beautiful works. In the few biographical details that survive, as in the works themselves, he emerges as one of the most interesting and experimental painters of this generation, a highly gifted product of Vasari's Accademia del Disegno whose career sadly ended all too soon, in 1572, shortly after painting the two panels for the Studiolo. Larry J.Feinberg notes that Cavalori's style was "a remarkable approximation of Pontormo's manner of the late 1520s".
