GEORGE FORSTER was born in Bavaria, Germany, and emigrated to New York in 1865 with his wife and his seven children. By 1870, he was exhibiting paintings at the National Academy of Design, the Brooklyn Art Association, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and at the Boston Athenaeum. He lived primarily in Brooklyn until his death in 1896.
George Forster is known for lush still lifes in rather small dimensions, full of the sense of texture from smooth to rough, he placed fruit in natural settings with animals and plants. The present picture is not only exceptional in its dimensions, further it combines the elegant attitude of an attractive young girl in a traditional south german costume, with the artist’s unparalleled talent for rendering nuances of color and texture, elevating simple fruits and flowers to a level of sterling elegance.
His paintings are a literal feast for the eyes, introducing a realm of pure visual delight. His work is now featured in the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO the Columbus Museum of Art, OH and the Birmingham Museum of Art, AL among other prominent collections.
The picture retains its original gilt frame, decorated with a relief of wine leaves and small pears in the corners.
